Disney Traditions

When I was 19, my older sister lived in FL, and I had already moved to TN. I don’t remember the timeframe exactly, but she was graduating from a religious program, and invited family and friends to be there for it.

There was a family from where we were from in IL whom my sister and I had both worked for in our high school years, as nannies/mother’s helpers. The mom and the youngest two kids were going to go to FL to see her, and offered for me to stay with them.

And here was the thing: they were going to stay at a Disney World Resort, because they were going to spend a couple days at Disney World!

And here’s the other big thing: I had never been before! My family growing up not only could not afford it, but also didn’t really have a desire to go. So, here was my chance.

I unfortunately cannot recall what I felt like walking through the ticket turnstile, and making my way under the railroad, and seeing Main St. for the first time.

But I have so many precious memories from that special first trip, ones I will never forget!

And here’s what I do recall from that first trip:

-I would never ride Space Mountain again (it was unfortunately my first experience riding any Disney ride, and it TERRIFIED me, and ultimately scarred me for life lol.)

-I bought my first official Disney Parks merchandise (I don’t remember all that I got, but I know I did get a light-up Tinkerbell magnet that I still have.)

                 -And I was hooked.

My next Disney trip was a couple years down the road with my (7 months pregnant) sister, her husband, Castle Kara and her two boys. It was a long trip, I believe about 10 days, and we did all four parks. I rode so many rides for the first time that trip as well. It was such a blast.

And I knew there were a couple souvenirs I had to get: a pair of Mickey ears, magnets, and key chains. I came home with quite the variety, all of which I still have. Some were also gifts for friends and families, as it seems I can’t go to Disney World and not bring goodies back for those around me. I think it’s because I want to share some of that Disney magic with them.

Another couple years later, and I was going on a work trip to Disney World. We only did a couple days, but it didn’t matter, I knew what I was going to get: Mickey ears, magnets, and key chains. I also got these cute Mickey-inspired food post-its, a book on Hidden Mickeys (because I’m obsessed with them!), and a Minnie polka-dot print tote bag.

And that brings me to my point. Over the years, ever since my first Disney trip, I had a tradition of getting new magnets, Mickey ears, and key chains anytime I was at Disney. I now also add pins, and other merchandise as they are always coming out with cute new stuff!

I love my tradition of finding my Disney purchases that mean something to me. I have others as well. Such as: eating a Dole Whip at least once (it’s usually more!), riding the Magic Carpets with my niece and nephew (although they may be getting too big for it now!), riding Pirates (always a must!), and doing at least one Character Dining experience.
